In this, the ninth Open Studios North Fife – from puppet makers to jewellers, textile, ceramic and glass artists to those who work in metal, wood and stone, photography, paint & charcoal – we have them all.
We hope you have a great time visiting lots of us! Some of our regular participants are taking a year out, others who’ve had time out are back with us, and we have many new to the event in 2014. All studios are open for 3 days, Sat 3rd – Mon 5th May.
You may notice that some other groups and individuals choose to hold exhibitions on the same weekend as Open Studios North Fife and sometimes use similar signage. You will be able to identify open studio artists who have paid the participation fee which funds this brochure and the extensive advertising of this event by the colourful Open Studios logo, with a number on it corresponding to studio numbers in the brochure, on our white and black sign boards.
Make sure you add your name to the mailing list of any artist whose work you admire to receive notice of other events in which they are taking part.
Open Studios North Fife is one of very few such events which is focussed on artists who practise in the area opening their work spaces rather than borrowing or hiring exhibition venues.
We know that half the fun is seeing into the interesting spaces in which work is created! A few participants have to share venues because of legal/safety restrictions with their own places but all are required to have their permanent studio in the area. This year we have made a one-off exception to our rules to allow a couple of exhibitors who are unable to exhibit at their workshops because of building work to use a local hall.
You will be able to pay some participants with your credit card but most do not have this facility so remember to bring a cheque book or cash if you plan to purchase.
Open Studios North Fife is an opportunity for you to speak to artists about their methods and sources of inspiration and perhaps buy or commission directly from them.
At the Create in Fife awards ceremony on Wednesday 13th November, Open Studios North Fife won the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution’.
The award was presented by Caroline Parkinson from Creative Scotland in recognition of the impact the event has had as it has grown, both on creative life in this part of Fife, and on other businesses. It started in 2006 with 14 participants and in 2013 had over 80, attracting more than 22,500 visits to the studios and work spaces of professional artists and designer-makers in the area, bringing increased business to accommodation providers, cafes, restaurants and shops in the process!
